Proposed visit to Carlisle
blank spacer
We are currently planning a day out in Carlisle for Saturday 25th September. This would include a visit to the excellent Carlisle Museum (Tullie House), including a look 'behind the scenes' - and then a visit to the Cathedral, again going behind the scenes to look at some of the other buildings and their contents (eg the Prior's Tower and the Fratry). If you think you would like to come, please give the Secretary an early indication by phone or email, as the visit will only go ahead if numbers are sufficient.

Re-scheduling of the Annual Dinner
blank spacer
Following a steady decrease in the numbers of members attending the Annual Dinner, and associated comments from members regarding inclement weather, dark nights and unfamiliar locations, the Committee has taken the decision to re-arrange the programme for the current year, as follows.

The Annual Dinner (currently shown as 21st January 2011) will now take place on 20th May 2011.

The Annual General Meeting (currently shown as 18th February 2011) will now be held on 21st January 2011.

On the 18th February 2011 there will now be a standard evening talk (the speaker and topic are yet to be confirmed).

The Committee hopes that these changes have the approval of members, and that they will achieve the desired result.

The "Victoria County History of Cumbria" Project

The Victoria County History for Cumberland was started, and 2 volumes were published, but the work was not completed, and for Westmorland was never started. A new Project has been set up, (a) to update the existing volumes and (b) to prepare and publish the "missing" volumes. Details of the Project can be found on the Project website

Brindle Workhouse
blank spacer
The Brindle Workhouse, located at Top o' the Lane, closed in 1872, following construction of the new Workhouse in Chorley. Very little is known about the structure of the facility, as the buildings were quarried for their stone immediately following the closure. A resident of Top o' the Lane, Bernard Fleming, with his wife Pat, has taken a keen interest in the site and has undertaken extensive research into the historical and documentary record. He has produced a brief history which can be read here.

He approached the Society to ask if we could offer any help in doing a more professional physical examination of the site in the hope that an accurate floor plan could be determined. Our current chairman, Gaynor Wood, arranged for a team of her archaeology students at UCLAN to carry out a series of surveys at the site. This exercise was undertaken on 17th and 18th April 2010. An interim report can be read here.

Pictures of the UCLAN team working at the Workhouse site can be seen here
